The AKA is working hard to ensure a safe and reliable supply of kratom from Indonesia

AKA Delegtion

The American Kratom Association delegation recently traveled to Indonesia and was honored to meet with chief of the Presidential Staff, Moeldoko in Jakarta to discuss the importance of maintaining a supply of pure, unadulterated kratom raw materials from Indonesia to the United States. Mr. Moeldoko agreed that kratom is a significant export commodity that supports more than 200,000 farmers in some of the most impoverished areas of Indonesia, and he committed to aligning Indonesia’s policies on kratom with the new and emerging science showing its safety profile.

The AKA will continue to work with the Indonesian government and the U.S. FDA to resolve all issues related to kratom exported from Indonesia to meet FDA standards for purity and quality.

Kratom FDA Import Alert 54-15: No Need to Panic

Kratom FDA Import Alert 54-15: No Need to Panic

kratom delivery preparation

On April 8 the FDA reissued an import alert pertaining to Kratom. This alert is meant to guide workers in the field to detain products containing Kratom at the U.S. borders. However, don’t fret; the supply of Kratom in the U.S. is not in danger.

What is the Kratom FDA Import Alert?

The Import alert issued by the FDA is specifically called Import Alert 54-15. Simply, it lists several companies whose shipments are subject to detention without physical examination (DWPE) at U.S. borders. This order has been in effect as early as 2014, so why is this news now?

The published date of the import alert has been updated because of additions to the listed companies who have been so-called “red listed.” Basically, nothing about the actual wording of the import alert has changed. The only new thing present is the updated list of companies whose products are now subject to detention without physical examination.

Why is there a Kratom FDA Import Alert?

So why is Kratom even on an import alert list? Well, that has a lot to do with product labeling and FDA approval. Kratom is not approved by the FDA for sale as a nutritional or dietary supplement. So, the products from companies on the red list are there usually because of mislabeling. Kratom is legal for sale as a ‘food’ product, and confiscated Kratom products are not complying with this label.

This labeling issue is important, because it speaks to the still present need for more research on Kratom, and regulation of Kratom to ensure that customers are consuming safe, and quality products. The current concern is that Kratom “appears to be a dietary supplement or contains a dietary ingredient that is a new dietary ingredient for which there is inadequate information to provide reasonable assurance that such ingredient does not present a significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury.” If the Kratom Consumer Protection Act could be passed country wide there would be an easy distinction between safe and legal Kratom, and adulterated products.

FDA Position on Kratom

The FDA’s stance on Kratom is a little confusing for anyone who knows all of the facts. While the FDA import alert on Kratom states that ” there does not appear to be a history of use or other evidence of safety establishing that kratom will reasonably be expected to be safe as a dietary ingredient. In fact, the scientific literature disclosed serious concerns regarding the toxicity of Kratom in multiple organ systems. Consumption of Kratom can lead to a number of health impacts”

However, this is confusing given the information the FDA withheld from the public that was finally published by the American Kratom Association. This revealed that the information used by the FDA to try and criminalize Kratom was rescinded because it was incorrect. The US Department of Health and Human Services sent a letter to the FDA detailing how Kratom does not meet requirements to be banned, Further, they highlight the “significant risk of immediate adverse public health consequences for potentially millions of users” if Kratom were to be banned. Read the full text of this letter here.

What the American Kratom Association Thinks

A representative from the American Kratom Association (AKA) said that the import alert is important, because of how Kratom is being imported into the US. The AKA does not support Kratom vendors who market their products as dietary or health supplements. This is exactly the type of products that the import alert is targeting. The AKA specifies, though, that the FDA does not have the authority to confiscate Kratom that is unadulterated and sold as food with no dietary or health claims.
The AKA has held a Kratom FDA import alert webinar to discuss the subject.

Conclusion

We’ve seen a little bit of panic from customers worried about their supply of Kratom. We urge you not to worry! Our supply of Kratom isn’t going anywhere. The general shipment of pure unadulterated Kratom into the US is not at risk. However, Kratom is still facing defamation from the FDA, and Kratom advocates will need to continue in their vigilance to keep safe and natural Kratom in the hands of customers that need it.

Why the FDA Is Suppressing Kratom

Why the FDA Is Suppressing Kratom

FDA

Kratom received a hard slap on the hand recently to remind us all that those who sell kratom must play by the FDA’s confusing rules.

A very careful reading of the press release announcing the raid, which took what the U.S. Food & Drug Administration said was $5 million dollars worth of kratom off the market, could leave the average person scratching their head.

My quick scan of their Web site, immediately after the bust, found no claims that kratom was to be used for medicinal purposes at all. The site has now been taken down “for maintenance” so it is impossible to tell what it said that purportedly caused the raid.

This much we know:

On September 25th, Federal Marshalls raided the Warehouse of Rosefield Management in Van Nuys, California. twenty-five-thousand pounds of the herb kratom were seized.

The crime? “A related company, Wholesale Shamanic Herbs, promoted kratom on its website with claims that the product is intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease.” Or so the FDA says.

The FDA filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California alleging that kratom is an unapproved new drug and a misbranded drug under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

It would seem that — for the moment — a company can possess and sell this herb, but they can’t say anything about what it is used for.

Kratom is still technically legal, but the FDA is obviously not happy about that and is willing to mis-state one key fact to mislead the public to agree.

Kratom Has Not Paid for the Privilege of Being Sold and Marketed in the U.S.

The story of this unusual herb, which has been used for centuries in Southeast Asia as a treatment for those withdrawing from opium and heroin addiction, as well as many other conditions including diabetes, diarrhea, and cough, is a long and fascinating one.

It is, perhaps more accurate to say that this herb was confiscated because it is being used — very effectively — as a way for America’s prescription drug addicts to break free without experiencing the usually traumatic withdrawal symptoms that stop most victims of Oxycontin and other opioids from getting clean.

One would think this country would welcome a solution to the problem that is causing a dramatic rise in the annual number of overdose deaths, with a growing number among women. Unfortunately, the true crime seems to be promoting the cessation of addiction, without the medically approved creation of a new, more-tenacious addiction to another set of pharmaceutical drugs under the care of a medical doctor or professional drug rehab counselor.

The list of DEA complaints alleging dire consequences for those who use kratom is equally applicable to those who drink too much beer, wine, or whiskey — which also are regulated and we must assume are “safe and effective“.

Consumption of kratom — the DEA and FDA say — can lead to a number of health problems including respiratory depression, nervousness, agitation, aggression, sleeplessness, hallucinations, delusions, loss of libido, tremors, skin hyperpigmentation, nausea, vomiting, constipation and severe withdrawal signs and symptoms.

The accusation that kratom causes respiratory depression is completely in conflict with this scientific research that shows the promise of this non-opiate painkiller. All the opioid drugs currently prescribed, on the other hand, do cause this deadly risk.

Here is the quote from Wikipedia’s listing for 7-Hydroxymitragynine: “One notable distinction between 7-hydroxymitragynine and traditional opioids is that 7-hydroxymitragynine does not cause hypoventilation (respiratory depression) and therefore does not carry the primary safety risk associated with traditional opioids.”

As usual, the FDA’s accusations are comical, in addition to being inaccurate: nervousness, agitation, aggression, sleeplessness, hallucinations, delusions, loss of libido, tremors, skin hyperpigmentation, nausea, vomiting, constipation and severe withdrawal signs and symptoms.

Nervousness, agitation, aggression, sleeplessness, and tremors can equally be caused by numerous drugs the FDA has approved for use, including coffee. Why are these other FDA-approved products permitted?

Alcohol, also regulated by the FDA, has also been known to cause nausea, vomiting, hallucinations (Pink Elephants, anyone?), tremors, and severe withdrawal symptoms. Why is alcohol allowed to be openly sold and consumed at sporting events where children are present?

Withdrawal from heavy consumption of alcohol over an extended period of time can result in “alcohol withdrawal syndrome: increased hand tremor, insomnia, nausea or vomiting, transient hallucinations (auditory, visual or tactile), psychomotor agitation, anxiety, tonic-clonic seizures, and autonomic instability.(Thanks to Wikipedia).

Oddly enough nausea and vomiting are the only unpleasant results of kratom use that ring true — and these are only found in those who accidentally (or purposely) take more than a reasonable quantity of the herb.

Hyperpigmentation has only been a problem for those who have worked for years in the bright sun of the jungles of Southeast Asia, while chewing quantities of kratom leaves to support their hard labor cheerfully. I have never heard of any U.S. or European kratom-user complaining of hyperpigmentation, though — if true — kratom might also be marketed as a sunless tanning aid.

But seriously, what is this fuss about kratom all about?

This all boils down to a turf battle between the established monopoly the pharmaceutical industry has over the distribution of products and information about those products — and a brash new herb which has burst onto the U.S. market as a better solution to (among other things) the U.S. opioid addiction crisis.

Big Pharma bought their way into a monopoly stake in the U.S. system of medical care. The FDA is the officially-sanctioned watchdog over what we may take — and what we may be told — for our health issues.

The FDA is staffed and advised at the higher levels by many individuals with ties to the pharmaceutical industry. Can you say, “Conflict of Interest? I bet you can!”

Our safety — and truth in advertising — are not the primary concern of the FDA, as anyone with a vaccine-injured child can attest.

Occasionally, as we are seeing with medical marijuana, a product which is not approved by the FDA is left alone, apparently because there is so much tax revenue to be gained by doing so. (Oh…and also because the federal government holds a patent on one of the drugs made from cannabis.)

Kratom is a newcomer which — although it has a long history of proven success and safety in countries where it grows — has not come up with the billions of dollars required to pay for the privilege of being sold on the U.S. market.

Kratom Has Not Paid the Piper

If absolute safety were really the issue, we would not have items such as alcohol, tobacco, vaccines, aspartame, Oxycontin, Tylenol, Fosamax and GMO foods being sold on the U.S. market.

Because these products have paid the fee to cross the barrier to entry in the huge U.S. market — and they can easily afford the occasional billion dollar fines for the deaths and injuries they frequently cause — they are permitted to do business here.

A fledgeling, disorganized industry marketing a plant substance that has never, by itself, caused a reported death in centuries of use doesn’t stand a chance against a de facto drug monopoly whose turf is protected by the FDA. Or, does it?

If Our Medical System Is So Great, Why Is Our Health Hitting New Lows?

If the FDA is watching over the safety of the drugs we use, what are we to make of the 100,000-plus deaths each year from pharmaceutical drugs?

Is a “Black Box” warning on the package of pills sufficient to protect us from overdose (in the case of Oxycontin) or osteonecrosis of the jaw (in the case of Fosamax)? Paying the FDA a billion or two as a fine for deceptive marketing and letting them keep selling their deadly products doesn’t seem like much protection.

The only ones getting good protection from the FDA are Big Pharma. They have paid the fee and are permitted to market products that are addictive, deadly, and legal.

They are protected from competition by an herb with considerable medical research behind it — an herb, kratom, that is preferred by hundreds of thousands of U.S. opioid, heroin, and benzodiazepine drug addicts.

One would think the American people and their government, in particular, would be very happy to welcome many former drug addicts back into the realm of productive, taxpaying citizens. What is truly amazing is that these citizens pay for their own do-it-yourself detox process, because they can’t charge it off to insurance or Medicare/Medicaid.

What a bonus for the taxpayers! Hundreds of thousands of former prescription drug addicts are now free of their habit, having paid for their own self-treatment — all thanks to kratom.

Many no longer use kratom. Some others use it only occasionally when pain flares or anxiety raises its ugly head.

Most, like this writer, say quitting kratom is less arduous than quitting its sister herb, caffeine.

So, tell me again — What is the FDA protecting us from?

Or, perhaps it is more accurate to ask, “Whom is the FDA protecting? The American public or the special interests of the pharmaceutical industry and the redundant jobs of the rehab industry?”

Salmonella-Laced Kratom Worth $400K Seized By CBP In Detroit From China

Every day, more and more people try kratom. A single dose of five grams of kratom is all you need to combat stress, pain, a bad mood for hours. While there are hundreds if not thousands of vendors in the United States, there are always risk involved in purchasing kratom online. One of the biggest risks is exposure to tainted kratom.

While you may believe otherwise, there are vendors who have little to no morals. They will sell tainted kratom without giving the buyer a second thought. For example, a Detroit kratom vendor was discovered with about 1,200 pounds of kratom powder that was estimated to be worth more than $400,000.

Salmonella Bacteria

A thorough inspection of the powdered kratom revealed it was tainted with salmonella, a bacteria responsible for more than 1.3 million cases of illness in the United States each year. The illness begins with stomach cramps which continue to worsen over time. The stomach cramps are followed by diarrhea and potentially fever, leading to the need for immediate medical treatment and even worse hospitalization.

The onset of salmonella symptoms is about six hours after exposure. In some cases, patients have reported being asymptomatic for up to six days after exposure. When the symptoms do finally appear, they are very powerful.

Originated From China

Kratom originates from Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia. In this case, the salmonella-tainted kratom originated from China. Laboratory testing revealed the imported kratom was not botanical soils, as first thought by US Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Office of Field Operations.

The kratom was being stored at the Fort Street Cargo Facility in Detroit. A sample of the substance was tested by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The results revealed the green powder was positively kratom. Further testing showed the kratom to be contaminated with the bacteria salmonella.

Prevent World Kratom Ban

Prevent World Kratom Ban, Don't Be Silenced

The American Kratom Association is collecting comments from kratom consumers to submit in response to the FDA.

The FDA is asking the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) & U.N. to consider banning kratom internationally.

SO WE MUST COLLECT AS MANY KRATOM CONSUMER COMMENTS AS POSSIBLE BY AUGUST 9TH 2021! These “formal comments” will be used as proof that kratom shouldn’t be banned.

How you can protect kratom from an international ban?
Please submit your comments, even if you already entered via Federal Registry. The AKA is working hard to prompt as many kratom consumer comments as possible! Your comment, combined with getting others to comment, will make a huge difference.

Why comment if I already added a comment on the Federal Registry site?
-THE AKA HAS CONFIRMED THAT THE FDA IS NOT REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ANY COMMENTS TO THE UN EXPERT COMMITTEE — THEY ONLY HAVE TO “CONSIDER” THEM.
Submitting via the form below will ensure both the W.H.O. and the UN expert committee, as well as the FDA, hear your voice.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO KRATOM

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO KRATOM

Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine

OVERVIEW

Kratom is the common name for Mitragyna speciosa, a tropical evergreen native to the marshy jungles of Southeast Asia. It grows wild in central and southern Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and elsewhere in the Pacific Rim.

Known for its hanging clusters of deep yellow flowers and reaching up to 42 feet (13 meters) in height, kratom has numerous uses in folk medicine. Traditionally, the broad green leaves are plucked by hand and dried in the sun, to be brewed as a tea or pulverized and swallowed with water.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, kratom has increased in visibility around the world. Regular kratom users see it as an invaluable aid for mental and physical health, while others enjoy its dual recreational value as a stimulant or sedative-narcotic (depending on the dose).

EFFECTS

Kratom dosage

How much kratom to take depends on your physiology, tolerance, and other factors. Chances are that as a newbie your tolerance is nil, but there may be a cross-tolerance effect with other opioids.

In any case, the recommended starting dose is one to two grams. If you’re sensitive, you’re probably better off starting with one gram. Ideally, you should measure out your dose on a digital scale. Capsules tend to contain between 350 and 750 mg, so you may need one to three for a starting dose.

The three main ways to take kratom powder (dried ground leaf) are:

Swallowing with a drink (aka “toss and wash,” i.e. tossing it into the mouth and washing it down with a non-carbonated drink—ideally fruit juice or chocolate milk to cover the taste)
In capsules
In tea (recipe here)

The dosage guide on the kratom Reddit wiki suggests waiting 30-45 minutes after your first dose to see how it affects you. Then, if you feel you need more, take up to one more gram. After waiting another 30-45 minutes, take up to one more final gram if desired. And if this dose still fails to satisfy, start with three grams another day and repeat the process from there; don’t take any more on day one. And don’t take more than eight grams on any one day.
You should find your optimal dose pretty soon.

Generally speaking, a moderate dose of plain dried leaf (powdered) is 3-6 g, but anything above 5 g is considered strong. Kratom is usually consumed with fruit juice or water. A popular method is the “toss and wash,” which involves placing the powder in the mouth and chasing it down with a drink.

What to expect

On an empty stomach, kratom effects are noticeable from around the 15-20 minute mark, gradually building in intensity and peaking for two to four hours. Stronger doses may have a shorter onset.

Lower doses are often more stimulating. They may be characterized by increased motivation, talkativeness, and sociability, along with a feeling of euphoria and physical energy. Some people find the stimulant effects of kratom a little too “edgy” to be pleasant, at least at first. Other disagreeable kratom effects—including sweating, nausea, dizziness, and dysphoria—can also be experienced during the onset period, but they usually give way in time.

At the higher, sedative dose ranges, kratom users report a diminished sensitivity to physical and emotional pain, and a feeling of general contentedness. Some go into a kind of “waking-dreaming” reverie, especially when listening to music. Ethnobotanist and author Daniel Siebert likened this to the state prized by 19th-century Romantics, who used opium to keep one foot in dreamland and the other in the real world.

Additional kratom effects might include mild visuals (both open- and closed-eye), a warming sensation, increased empathy, and possibly sexual arousal. The pupils are likely to constrict if they change size at all.

Many find that sex on kratom lasts longer, but that it can also feel impossible to climax. Erectile enhancement is common, but so is erectile dysfunction. Frequent use and higher doses can substantially diminish libido—sometimes completely. But many seem to enjoy combining sex and kratom; some men take it to increase the enjoyment of their partner even if it means sacrificing their own.

Kratom and Suboxone

Combining kratom and Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone, a common opiate replacement therapy) may seem unavoidable if you’re trying the former to give up the latter. Although it’s not ideal, a careful balance of titration and dose timing can apparently be effective. For more information, see the kratom Reddit group.

Kratom and Adderall

Kratom is reportedly a good alternative to Adderall for managing ADD/ADHD. Some also find it helps to relieve an Adderall comedown. While it’s generally unsafe to combine kratom and stimulants, there appear (anecdotally) to be few if any negative kratom side effects with Adderall in particular. However, it may be best to stagger your intake of each, for example by taking kratom several hours after Adderall.

Kratom and weed

Many people combine kratom and weed for enhanced relaxation effects. The differing pharmacological actions of these substances is said to be positively synergistic. As with other substances, however, you might want to stagger your intake. One recommendation is to eat some food in between taking kratom and cannabis to avoid feeling faint or lightheaded.

PERSONAL GROWTH

Most users take kratom for pain, anxiety, or some other specific condition, but it’s also considered a “plant teacher”—a tool for exploration and growth. Described by one kratom user as a “nurturing mirror,” it can gently draw attention to areas of personal and interpersonal dysfunction. These can be explored within the context of an emotionally honest, “entactogenic” high.

Some kratom users report that kratom can reduce social anxiety, and even improve sexual performance.

Liberated from the confines of everyday thought patterns, people also find greater appreciation for being alive.

THERAPEUTIC USE

There are no mainstream medical uses for kratom, but it shows great therapeutic potential.

Daniel Siebert described it as one of the most effective herbal analgesics, second only to opium. 7-hydroxymitragynine in particular is 13 times more potent than morphine and considerably less addictive. Withdrawal symptoms from kratom are also far milder and more short-lived. Mitragynine, meanwhile, is seen as a potential replacement for codeine, offering comparable analgesic effects without the fatal respiratory depression. Curiously, synthetic mitragynine is less potent than extracted mitragynine.

Kratom for opiate withdrawal and pain management

Kratom could eventually come to replace methadone in the treatment of heroin addiction especially given its relative ease of production, making it ideal for poor and developing countries. Certainly the use of kratom for heroin withdrawal has become common around the world. It can also be helpful for getting off prescription opioids.

Kratom for alcohol cravings

It could be a viable alternative to alcohol too, since it promotes relaxation and sociability without the emotional/physical hangover.

Kratom therapy for depression and anxiety

At least one study supports the growing use of kratom to manage anxiety and depression. Mice injected with mitragynine were found to have lower levels of corticosterone, a hormone involved in the regulation of stress responses and energy. The open, introspective mindset that kratom creates may also be useful in psychotherapy.

Opinions on the best strains vary. One of the best strains of kratom for depression is reportedly white Maeng Da. Green strains are also supposed to be good. Green and white strains are reportedly the best kratom for anxiety too.

Kratom weight loss

Many people lose weight while using kratom. However, it’s not necessarily an appetite suppressant in itself; some find it makes them eat more. Weight loss may instead be attributed to its anxiolytic or antidepressant effects eliminating cravings for junk food. It also promotes healthy lifestyle changes that lead to weight loss, such as getting more exercise and drinking less alcohol.

Other therapeutic uses

Other conditions that kratom shows potential for include diarrhea, chronic pain, inflammation, arthritis, migraines, and even cancer.

HISTORY & STATS

It’s not clear when kratom use began, but the practice is thought to be ancient. In its native growing regions, leaves from the plant may be used to numb aches and pains, soothe fevers, treat diarrhea, manage diabetes, and alleviate addiction. They have also been applied as poultices to wounds or spread across the abdomen to drive out worms.

Perhaps the most popular use has been to chew on the leaves for energy—similar to the way coca is used in the Andes. In Thailand, peasant workers have been known to chew up to ten times a day while working outside in the sun.

From at least as far back as the early 19^th century in Malaysia, kratom has also been used as a sedative—especially as a replacement for opium.

Amid growing enthusiasm for kratom’s medical potential, the active constituent mitragynine was isolated in 1921 and tested on humans in 1932. It was likened to cocaine for its stimulant effects on the central nervous system.

By the early 1940s, the government of Thailand was seeing a massive decline in opium tax revenue. Evidently, addicts were turning to kratom—an unregulated drug—to manage their withdrawal symptoms. The Kratom Act was passed in August 1943, forbidding anyone from cultivating the plant and ordering all existing specimens destroyed.

Elsewhere, scientific interest prevailed. More than 20 alkaloids were isolated during the 1960s and, in 1994, the second of kratom’s primary active compounds was identified: 7-hydroxymitragynine. The following year saw the first synthesis of mitragynine.

Public awareness of kratom flourished throughout the early 2000s, mainly via online message boards. In 2005, however, both M. speciosa and mitragynine were scheduled in Australia, banning them for sale or possession without a license. Enforcement of the Kratom Act also ramped up in Thailand, where arrests quintupled between 2005 and 2009. In 2012, when Thai police ordered the destruction of hundreds of wild kratom trees in a protected area of forest in Satun Province, locals resisted their attempts.

In the United States, various advocacy and campaign groups, including the American Kratom Association, Botanical Education Alliance, and United Kratom Association, have sprung up to safeguard kratom’s legality. Thanks to efforts like theirs, the DEA was forced to withdraw an August 2016 “notice of intent” to place kratom into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.
